  • R code to construct a ballot

    Inputs a ranked list (spreadsheet) of teams 1 to 68.

    Follows basic bracket principles (although some of these principles are flexible as per the committee).

    Checks to confirm that all 32 conferences (auto bids) are represented.

    The four number 1 seeds, by ranked order, get placed in their preferred region if still available, otherwise get randomly placed to available region.

    Teams 5 to 16 get placed in seed lines 2 to 4, with no two teams from the same conference in the same region unless there are 5 or more top 4 seeds from the conference.

    A check is done on balance of regions in the top 4 seeds. The difference in sum of ranks (absolute seeding 1-68) of teams in each region should not exceed 5.

    Remaining teams get placed in the bracket. Intra-conference match-ups are avoided in the first two rounds. E.g. seeds 4, 5, 12, and 13 from the same region should all be from different conferences, if possible.

    The final four automatic teams are placed into the Dayton play in games as 16/16 matchups.

    The final four at large teams are placed into the Dayton play in games, either both matchups as 11/11 or one as an 11/11 matchup and the other as a 12/12 matchup, depending on where automatic bids are seeded. In theory it is possible that a play-in game for the final at large teams could be on the 13 seed line or lower, but this has never happened to date. The script is not designed to handle this remote possibility.
